Antwerp lost 0-1 to English second-tier side Millwall in a classic ‘cup match’, but defender Rein Van Helden sees valuable lessons ahead of the league opener. The Great Old host Kortrijk (15th in the table) at home on 13 February 2027 next.
The friendly was physical and direct, with little room for detailed play. Van Helden, who partnered Tsunashima in central defence, admitted Antwerp got drawn into Millwall’s style. ‘With more courage, we could have hurt them,’ said the defender. Tsunashima left the pitch in the second half, but the injury is not serious.
Analyst Patrick Goots praised Antwerp’s unwavering fan support, which sang from start to finish. He called the game ‘football the English way’ and highlighted two bright spots: Ahoka, impressive again, and Mejia, who made an instant impact when substituted. ‘He’s going to be my new favourite,’ Goots declared.
