Antwerp start this season with a win against Beveren. Midfielder Thibo Somers speaks of a fresh wind within the club. 'There is faith in this group', he says. The win was for Antwerp more than just a successful comeback. According to Somers, there is a different feeling within the group than last season. The Great Old seems to be starting a new chapter with a young, eager core. Nozawa, Tsunashima, Somers (and Frey). Those are the three/four names that started in the base of Antwerp on Sunday evening with at least one full season of experience in an Antwerp shirt. Further, a lot of young players at the kick-off: Tuypens, Renders, Dierckx, Ahoka & Fofana are all under 21 years old and with Salah, Van Helden, there were still two players of 24 years old between the lines. Somers speaks clearly of a 'fresh wind' within the club. Despite the necessary uncertainties in the overnamed dossier, Antwerp had a good preparation according to him, where particularly current assistant Faris Haroun kept the group physically sharp. The first match did not go perfectly, especially since Antwerp had to build up automatism with a few new players. 'It was searching in our first match, with a few new boys. Sometimes it has to be on character and that we showed', said Somers. That energy of the young players must make Antwerp recognizable again this season. 'The organization and pressing were good, we are also known for that', stated Somers. That the team took the three points after a difficult first half, strengthens according to him the faith within the group. That faith is also important in a competition format without play-offs and without point division. 'It will be quite exciting', predicts Somers, who sees only one clear task: winning matches. The comeback against Beveren was already a first step in that approach. Antwerp is currently in 5th place in the Jupiler Pro League, with 3 points and 1 win out of 1 match. The next match is on February 13, 2027 against Kortrijk.
