Former Royal Antwerp FC goalkeeper Jean Butez has been called up to the France national team for the first time. The 31-year-old, who moved to Como for over two million euros in 2025, replaces the injured Robin Risser in the squad for the upcoming international break.

Butez played three seasons for Royal Excel Moeskroen before joining Antwerp in 2020. At the Bosuil he became a key figure and played a significant part in the club's successful period. His move to Italy did not end his international aspirations.

It is a major recognition of Butez's performances in the Belgian league. He joins a squad that includes Mike Maignan, the first-choice goalkeeper at the last World Cup, and Guillaume Restes of Toulouse. France will play four matches, including two against Belgium on 28 September in Brussels and 5 October in Paris.

For Antwerp, currently 13th in the Jupiler Pro League with seven points from seven games, it is positive news about a former player. Mark van Bommel's side look ahead to their next fixture away to KVC Westerlo on 10 October, a chance to break a recent run of four consecutive defeats. Antwerp's full squad is available on the club website, along with the current league standings.
